由一位名叫奥维德巴特勒的律师创建。最初建校时学校名为西北基督教大学。该校是印第安纳州最早接受男女合校的大学，也是印第安纳州第一所允许学生通过全新的电子系统进行专业选择的学校。学校的学术力量雄厚，在美国有良好的声誉，在中西部的大学中排名第6 。学校还因为其在文理科方面的杰出表现而受到National guides 的较高评价。巴特勒大学的旧校区现在是印第安纳波利斯发展最快的地区之一，新校区位于印第安纳波利斯的东部郊区，占地 290 英亩 ，有 20 幢校园建筑。学校有280 名全职教职员工，学生4400 余名，学校的师生比为1 ：13 。学校设施齐全，有超过100 个学生组织和团体。

7、申请要求
(1)学士申请者必须高中毕业，TOEFL550分，雅思6.0以上。
(2)硕士申请者： TOEFL550分或雅思6.0以上。需要GRE/GMAT成绩，具体要求根据专业的不同有变化。例如申请教育学硕士，只有学生GPA低于3.0，才需提供GRE成绩。
